NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - U. S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed a tariff-modification bill for more than a dozen importers of various products that pose a potential threat to U. travelers visiting the island of Africa, according to officials from the White House, the European Union, and the Department of Defense.
The U. Trade Representative's office said in a statement the proposal was part of a "significant legislative effort" to tackle the threat posed by products labeled as "Viagra," "Cialis," or "Levitra," which contain ingredients that are not FDA-approved and are being imported from foreign countries.
It is the first time a U. Customs agency has received a report of shipments of an unapproved product containing an ingredient that was not approved for the sale in the United States.
A U. Customs official confirmed Tuesday that products labeled as "Viagra" have been seized, along with a few products marketed as "Cialis." The official's statement comes after the Food and Drug Administration identified a product called "Cialis" as having an undeclared ingredient that is not FDA-approved. That is the undeclared ingredient in Viagra, which is sold under the brand name "Cialis."
Trump said he "will follow up with the other products that are not FDA-approved."
"The products that are being seized are not FDA-approved medications but are imported products that are not approved for use in the United States," Trump said in a statement. "It is a major public health emergency and will continue to be a serious threat to American health and safety."
